How to Install BURG 2

By

One of the many themes BURG has to offer.
One of the many themes BURG has to offer.

BURG is short for "Brand-new Universal loadeR from GRUB." It is an excellent addition to the default Ubuntu bootloader, GRUB 2. The main reason people switch to BURG is because of the amazing themes it offers once installed. It's not really a replacement to GRUB, but rather an add-on. Another feature of BURG that GRUB doesn't have by default is password protection (more info about password protection will be provided later on in this tutorial).

BURG-manager is a GUI (graphical user interface) that allows you to easily and safely install BURG. From BURG-manager, you can password protect your computer, change the theme of BURG, and choose the default operating system to name a few features.

Installing BURG-manager

Editing your boot menu is a delicate thing, so a bit of risk is involved while installing BURG or updating GRUB. Read the entire tutorial before you actually perform it. To be on the safe side, backup any files you don't want to lose, or create a bootable Ubuntu CD/USB and follow these steps to repair BURG in a worst case scenario.

First we need to install BURG-manager. The easiest way in doing that is via the repositories. Add this line to the file /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://www.sourceslist.eu/repo/ubuntu lucid main non-free

This line can be entered in the correct file by pasting this into the therminal:

echo "deb http://www.sourceslist.eu/repo/ubuntu lucid main non-free" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

Now paste this code to download and install BURG-manager:

wget http://www.sourceslist.eu/?download=public.key -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Tada! BURG-manager is now installed. You can safely ignore the Itallian text that appears. Now is the easy part; installing BURG.

Open up BURG-manager by going into Applications->System Tools->BURG-manager. Select you language and enter your password. First thing to do is to select the correct hard drive. /dev/sda in most cases is usually the right drive. Click on "BURG Install", you can't miss it. Next open up a terminal (while keeping BURG-manager open) and enter this to ensure BURG can see all your boot opions and operating systems:

sudo update-burg

Reboot and you should now see the new interface. To shorten reduce the number of options, press "F" and all the recovery and kernel options for Ubuntu/Linux should disappear until you press "F" again.

You can post your questions below and I'll answer them as soon as possible. If you haven't registered to Hubpages yet, you can do so here.
